LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — “They were compliant with everything the officers told them to do and the officer didn’t have any trouble.”
Speaking over the phone, Chief Robert Jennings says they received the nationwide Amber Alert for 2 year old Maliah Harris and spotted the 2002 Pontiac Aztec shortly before midnight. As officers approached the car, they noticed little Maliah in the backseat.
“I think she was in the car seat but she wasn’t buckled in. And as far as I know she’s in good shape,” said Chief Jennings.
Officers notified Harris and Studdard about the warrants out for their arrest in Lowndes County.
“The officers didn’t have any trouble taking them into custody. The lady was driving the car and she seemed to be alright. According to my officers, Donald Harris seemed to be high,” said Chief Jennings.
Lowndes County investigators found methamphetamine at their home in Caledonia. Drugs were also found inside the car.
“We did discover some drugs, we believe it’s bath salt. We will not be sure until we take it to the crime lab and have it analyzed,” said Chief Jennings.
As Harris and Studdard prepare for their trip back to Mississippi, investigators in Lowndes County are relieved the Amber Alert helped keep Maliah Harris safe.
“Our detective received tons of calls because of the Amber Alert and the notification from the media and things so it was a great asset,” said Captain Ryan Rickert with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators plan on picking up Harris and Studdard Friday morning and should arrive back in Lowndes County that evening.
