Video: Fulton’s Mayor Elect No Stranger To Local Politics
FULTON, MISS. (WCBI) – Fulton Mayor Lynette Weatherford wants to help ensure a smooth transition as she prepares to retire and her longtime friend and elected official gets ready for his new position.
“I’m just ready to pass the gavel,” Mayor Weatherford said.
That gavel will be passed to two term alderman Barry Childers. He won the mayor’s seat in Tuesday’s election and although he is familiar with how city government operates, he knows the mayor’s office comes with a lot of responsibilities.
“As mayor, probably will go to a lot of meetings, you will meet more people, get to know people,” Childers said.
In fact, Weatherford says she will miss interacting with so many people as mayor, whether it’s city hall workers, or the public.
“City Hall employees are just like family, I see them more than I do my family, I’m gonna miss that, and the people I work with , our citizens, coming in once a month, going to miss seeing them,” Weatherford said.
Weatherford worked for the city of Fulton for 23 years before becoming mayor. She says one of her proudest accomplishments as mayor was improving the water system for customers in the North Road area. Weatherford plans to spend time more time with her grandkids and family, while Mayor Elect Childers says he wants to keep Fulton on an upward track.
“Making this city a lot better place to live, we’re just always trying to grow and make it a good place to live, for home ownership and people to move here, retirees, family people,” he said.
Childers has owned and operated Fulton Auto Sale for years, he knows being mayor is a fulltime commitment, he says he will either transfer his duties to someone else at the business, or close it if her has to, in order to give all of his attention to his new position.
