NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WCBI) — After five years on the run, Janet and Ramon Barreto are back in the Union County Jail. As soon as they were handed over to Sheriff Jimmy Edwards, they were photographed, fingerprinted and processed. They they were given medical exams.
“She takes a lot of different types of medications, of course we will have to dispense that to her, as needed and supply that for her,” Edwards said.
The Barretos have been on the run since 2009, when they fled after posting bond. They face 25 federal and state charges, including manslaughter of a child, three counts of child abuse, six counts of child neglect and tampering with a witness. All crimes occurred in Union County.
They were arrested by U.S Marshals August 12th in Oregon at a shopping mall. Now, the high profile former fugitives will be treated like any other inmate.
“No sir, not really, they’re not much different,” the sheriff said.
Sheriff Edwards says it’s a relief to have the couple back in custody.
“We’ve had some folks that were proud they were captured. You know, never giving up, the Marshal service getting them up on the top 15, that was a big huge thing. Marshal service never gave up, we never gave up,” he said.
Although it’s been five years, Edwards says the case stands out for its cruelty involving innocent children.
“It is, it was probably the worst I’d seen at the time,” Edwards said.
Sheriff Edwards says he expects the Barretos will make an initial appearance next week. They will be appointed attorneys, then preparations will be underway for a trial, at least five years overdue.
The Barretos also ran a puppy mill from their Union County home. Sheriff Edwards says they could face additional charges for using false ids while on the run.
