STARKVILLE, Miss.(WCBI)–Gun sales have apparently shot through the roof in North Mississippi. And the number of background checks in the country has soared from about 1.8 million last November to 2.2 million this year.
When it comes to local gun sales, this past Christmas Holiday season was a good time where gun and pawn shop owners are experiencing a bang of a bottom line.
“And we bought it for security purposes. And I told him if I bought the gun there better be a diamond under my tree. And there was, ha, ha, ha,” said Donna Fowler/Eupora.
“If you think about it, where we are at we have more violence and we have more that don’t have gun permits, but they own non registered guns,” said Jonathan Toliver/Indiana.
“We’ve had a good year with gun sales. You know really been pretty steady, of course it up ticks when hunting season comes around. We sell a lot of rifles and shotguns this time of year, and pistols as well,” said Brandon Wright/manager-AAA Gun Shop.
Before each purchase form 4473 must be filled out where the prospective customer answers a series of some questions.
“And then I would run that information through the FBI nicks check. They do a background check. When I do it on line it usually, its pretty quick. Usually less than 5 minutes a total process in less there is a problem, it gets delayed or something like that,” said Brandon Wright.
With the increase in gun sales, some people like Samuel Bush of Starkville, do not even own a water pistol.
“They are not using guns for sport no more, if they are using it, for hunting that would be good but, too much crime around here. I love my kids, I love myself, and guns ain’t a good thing to have,” said Samuel Bush/Starkville.
“Most of the time when people buy guns they’ll tell me its for self defense or home defense. Or if they are buying a rifle or shotgun obviously they are hunting with it,” said Brandon Wright.
“We just live out in the country and so we decided it was time to purchase a gun for security purposes,” said Donna Fowler.
Federal law only requires licensed dealers to conduct background checks.
