SALTILLO, Miss. (WCBI) – A Lee County volunteer firefighter is out after crashing a fire truck and then being arrested for DUI.
34 year-old Phillip Gassaway was charged after the Thursday evening crash on County Road 811. He’s been charged with DUI first offense.
Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson says the Unity Fellowship Volunteer Fire Department truck was on its way to a grassfire.
He says Gassaway lost control of the truck.
Fire Department Captain Jimmy Stevens released the following statement:
“Unity Fellowship Volunteer Fire Department wants to apologize for this unfortunate incident. We would like to insure our community the firefighter is no longer with us and we will continue to strive to serve our people to the best of our abilities.”
Gassaway had been with the fire department for about a year.
