STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A popular steak house restaurant caught fire late Saturday in Starkville. Cappe’s Steak House has been a staple in the Starkville community for over 20 years.
Cappe’s Steakhouse opened in 1993 but has been on Eckford Drive since 2001. It’s known for it’s lunch specials and flamed-cooked steaks.
Residents say Cappe’s is an important part of the neighborhood.
“I feel terrible for them. Even on Sunday, I’ve seen a bunch people driving by after church. They come for their Blue Plate special. So I think it’s going to be a big loss for the community,” says Jean Mohammadi, a native of Starkville.
The Starkville Fire Department received a call about the restaurant fire around 11:30 Saturday night.
Officials say the fire was located in the kitchen and the waiting area. Long time customers were caught off guard as they headed to Cappe’s for lunch.
“I was shocked. I mean the first thing that come to my mind is ‘where am I going to get a good steak now’?,” says Archie Williams, a Cappe’s Steakhouse customer.
The fire was contained and put out in about 10 minutes. The restaurant was already closed and no one was inside. Cappe’s Steak house owner Eric Hallberg was notified and came to the site last night. Despite the fire, loyal customers hope the restaurant will keep its doors open for business.
“Well I’m hoping they have the opportunity to reopen, Just get them a new building a reopen,” says Williams.
The Starkville Fire Department says they are still investigating the fire and have not determined a cause for the blaze.
