TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — The life and career of a Tupelo musician who inspired Elvis is the focus of a new exhibit at the Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The exhibit was unveiled today and it highlights the musical career of Carvel Lee Ausborn, better known as “Mississippi Slim.”
In 1944, Mississippi Slim began a daily radio show on WELO in Tupelo. During that period, Mississippi Slim’s younger brother had a friend who begged him to take him to the radio show at the Lee County Courthouse, so he could sing.
The young man was Elvis Presley and Mississippi Slim allowed him to sing on his show.
“He thought he was talented, but it took him awhile, but nobody else wouldn’t give him a chance and Daddy said, ‘I will give him a chance,'” Mississippi Slim’s daughter Yvonne Davis said. “It’s so special they are remembering him after all these years. And he would be so proud if he could be here.”
The exhibit will be up through at least the end of March.
