Lowndes County, Miss.[WCBI]-In keeping with the mood of a spooky holiday season, some 900 high school seniors got a dose of reality at East Mississippi Community College’s Mayhew Campus today[Tuesday].
For seniors at 16 local high schools, it’s scary to think about a life of dead-end jobs, living paycheck to paycheck or even a life of crime if they don’t start thinking now about their future.
“We want the students to realize the reality of it all is, that you’ve got to go to college and get a skill or an education in order to make it in this world to pay your bills,” said Cindy Johnson, EMCC Career Planning.
With almost a thousand students making their way through three sessions, the reality fair offered 30 booths with courses, programs and potential future choices for success.
“Opportunity to show case what EMCC is all about, and all the programs, al the extra curricular activities that we have to offer here at EMCC,” said Johnson.
“They have a lot of different things that prepare you for college. Different, whatever you want to be, they have boards and you can ask questions and they just get you ready for what you want to be in college,” said Taylor Blevins, Reality Fair Goer.
“I was thinking about being a pediatrician and coming here helped me. Talking to the LPN’s and Rn’s,” said Raleighcia James, New Hope High School.
It was at last year’s reality fair that Dakota Brasher made his mind up about his future, now the campus ambassador is helping these seniors to do the same.
“I finally chose a degree this year of business and risk management. So they got all my core classes. It’s been great and they are helping me out a ton so they are really getting me prepared for a four year school,” said Brasher.
“Being able to experience all the different things they have for us, and all the different jobs, and the experience was just awesome,” said James.
This is the 5th year EMCC has been using the effective recruiting tool.
