TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – They turned out in Tupelo to honor Dr. King and recognize those who are making a difference in their community.
The annual MLK Commemorative Service took place at the Tupelo Civic Auditorium.
The event featured a message by Mayor Jason Shelton, entertainment from the MLK Community Choir and a drill team made up of youth from area churches.
Participants say the event is a chance to reflect on the importance of Dr. King’s accomplishments and also focus on work that still needs to be done to gain equality for all people.
“His message is very relevant during these days because his message points to unified, country, where we can stand as a country together, no matter what race, what color you are, opportunities in this country and they can only be fully enjoyed if we all enjoy them together and take advantage of them,” said Rev. William Shack, Committee for King.
The event is sponsored by the Committee for King and the city of Tupelo .
Longtime Coach Mickey Linder received the Drum Major Award for his work with young people through the years.
