Video: ‘Dancing With The King’ Promises Diverse Ballroom Dances Set To Elvis Songs
TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – Twice a week since February, I have laced up my dancing shoes and headed to the Dance Studio of Tupelo.
“We’re doing what’s called an east coast swing, our version is the triple step swing,” said Melissa Halbert, who is my instructor and dance partner for this routine, choreographed to Elvis’ well known hit, “Burning Love.”
Along with my routine, Halbert choreographed two other dances and she is also taking part in the professional competition for the “Dancing With The King” extravaganza.
She says it can be a challenge to remember all the dances.
“Sometimes things tend to run in, and it’s like, oh, we have a similar move here and there, really trying to keep them separate between each other, occasionally, it melds, but as y’ all are repeating things, I am too, and going over them in my head to make sure I can remember this for all you guys I’m leading and following with,” Halbert said.
This is the fourth year for the event. It is a project of the Tupelo Elvis Presley Fan Club and the Dance Studio . Students will have opportunities to win scholarships for future lessons and it is also a way to introduce Elvis’ music to a new generation.
Halbert says with nearly 800 Elvis songs to choose from, there are opportunities for virtually all ballroom dance styles.
“Dancing with the King is going to be a great weekend, so many of us have been working so hard for so many months, so we really want to put all of our time, effort and energy into a really great performance, we really want to see people there,” she said.
It all takes place at The Summit Center .
