BOSTON, Mass. (WCBI/MSU Athletics) — It has been a busy three days for the head coach of Mississippi State football.
After Saturday’s Maroon-White Spring Game, Dan Mullen and his wife Megan hopped on a flight to Boston, Massachusetts on Sunday, then came the Boston Marathon on Monday.
Mullen completed the 26.2 mile race without any setbacks, finishing in 4 hours, 28 minutes and 35 seconds. He finished the marathon with a 10:15 mile pace.
The run was to raise money for the Mullen Family 36 Foundation, which helps children in Mississippi through healthcare, education, athletics, the arts, and scholarships. Mullen ended up raising more than $40,000.
“It was an absolute dream come true to not only run the Boston Marathon but to finish it,” he said Monday night. “The entire experience was better than I ever imagined. When you are running, the support of the fans along the race and the camaraderie of your fellow runners pushes you to keep going and finish. It’s a scene I’ll never forget. I want to thank everyone who came out to the race and thank those who supported the Mullen 36 Family Foundation during this unforgettable journey. My hope is that this inspires the dreams of others and that we continue to help the young people in our state of Mississippi.”
It was the first race of any kind for Mullen, who turns 44 in nine days. In the process, the Mullen 36 Family Foundation raised over $40,000 for children’s charities. The foundation has impacted the lives of 36 different children’s charities throughout the state of Mississippi. Mullen wore the No. 36 as a football player.
Mullen, an avid runner who grew up just over 50 miles from the finish line in Manchester, New Hampshire, began a rigorous training program in January. The most miles he had logged in training were 20 at a given time. On Monday, he ran 26.2 miles through the historic course that featured several inclines, passing through the campus of Boston College and the familiar site of Fenway Park.
Mullen logged the first 13.1 miles in 2:06.34 and averaged 10:55 per mile during the entire race. He started at 11:15 a.m. ET and with cowbells ringing in the background, crossed the finish line 3:50 p.m. ET.
Mullen, who has led the Bulldogs to the winningest two-year stretch in program history, returns to the state of Mississippi on Tuesday evening. He begins a 2016 Road Dawgs Tour Thursday with stops in Meridian and Cleveland.
