TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Area bicyclists took to the streets this evening to remember those killed or injured while riding on public roads. The annual “Ride In Silence” took bicyclists from Tupelo’s Fairpark, to St Luke United Methodist Church and back to the downtown area. It ‘s an opportunity to raise awareness of the dangers cyclists face when they are on public roadways.
Organizer, Adam Morris said, “We need to share the road, we need to share the road as cyclists , with automobiles and I know we need to work there but the automobiles also need to recognize us as a vehicle, and also as a human life, it only takes a second to slow down and wait till it’s safe to pass us and you’re not endangering our lives or anyone else’s.”
The death in 2009 of 18 year old John Paul Frerer led to the passage of the “Three Foot Law” in Mississippi. Motorists are required to stay at least three feet from cyclists when they are on the public roadways.
