Video: Conference Provides Opportunity For Farmers To Sign Up For SNAP Merchant Program

VERONA, MISS. (WCBI) – North Mississippi farmers learn the latest research at the annual fruit and vegetable conference.

They’re also signing up to become an authorized retailer for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP.

“They’re trying to get more people who are receiving those benefits to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, ” said Dr. Jeff Wilson, of the MSU Extension Service.

Farmer’s Markets , such as Tupelo’s Farmer’s Depot, give people more opportunities to get fresh products from the farm. Now, through the USDA, farms and farmers markets can register to become retailers that accept SNAP payments.

“It’s a good program, it’s not necessarily a financial windfall for us, but it’s something we enjoy doing and helping the community,” said Melvin Ellis, who owns Mayhew Tomato Farms, which accepts vouchers from SNAP recipients at Farmers Markets. He says the program is hassle free.

Exposing more people to fresh produce and healthy choices are two reasons Gia Matheny wants to get the Hernando Farmer’s Market on board.

There will even be an incentive for SNAP recipients who patronize the Hernando Farmer’s Market.

“As the consumer comes up to our table and swipes their card, for say 10 dollars, we will have an incentive for them that will give them an additional ten dollars to spend just for produce items,” said Matheny.

Right now, there are 80 farmers markets authorized to accept SNAP in Mississippi.
