TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – A new law taking effect in a couple of days will allow Mississippians to carry a concealed gun in a purse, briefcase or other fully enclosed satchel without a state issued license.
Mississippi lawmakers passed the new concealed carry law during the last legislative session, as a way to help people exercise their Second Amendment rights, and also to be able to defend themselves.
Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson says the new law will mean law enforcement officers will encounter more people with weapons.
He encourages the public to let an officer know if they have a gun, whenever they are stopped, and he also says taking some sort of firearm training is helpful, especially when there is a life threatening emergency.
“I can give you a for instance, the concealed weapon permit, as well as being able to have a gun in the car with you was in effect a couple of years ago when the bank got robbed in Tupelo. Sitting there at Crosstown we counted up to ether 12 or 13 individuals sitting there in that particular area, within 25 or 30 feet of that bank robber, shooting police officers, had a weapon in the car and for whatever reason chose not to use it,” Sheriff Johnson said.
The bill takes effect July 1.
