COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Some grade-school students showed off their vocabulary skills today.
The 2015 Columbus-Lowndes County Spelling Bee went underway with 46 students in grades 4-8 from public, private and home schools competing for the district title.
The competition was held at Columbus Middle School.
WCBI’s own Aundrea Self moderated the event.
Many parents, as well as educators, were in attendance to show their support.
“It’s important to have spelling bees for children nowadays because that’s a component of everyday life,” CMS Principal Freda Dismukes said. “In a situation where you have kids applying even at McDonalds, you must know how to articulate your words and speak. Also with the society going global, we want our kids to be able to compete with kids on a national level, whether it’s Japan, Africa, whomever.”
After an intense face-off with another student, CMS 8th grader Hunter Perrigin won the competition. He will go on to compete at the mid-south spelling bee in Memphis in March.
