COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A string of house fires recently have left families struggling to get back on their feet. The American Red Cross helps those victims recover. Now the organization says its resources are running low. Fire destroyed Stewart’s North Columbus home Tuesday.
“I’m starting all over again like a new born baby. Then you have to go through a whole lot of stuff,” says Fire victim Yolanda Stewart.
Her family is now receiving help from the American Red Cross.
“I called them last night and they gave me a room. It was after 9 o’clock and I know she was at home resting her nerves. I sure appreciate what she did,” says Stewart.
In the past week, there have been at least three major house fires in the Golden Triangle, leaving families out in the cold. The non-profit organization has stepped up to assist the victims by providing meals, clothing and temporary shelter.
“We have been fortunate to be able to supply them with some financial funds for food and clothing to assist the family to get the process going for them to get on their feet. During the first three days, it’s usually the most difficult time for them. So that’s enough to give them time to breathe & say ok, well I got a place to sleep. I got something to eat and I got clothes until I can figure things out,” says Red Cross Disaster Manager Tamara Lapsley.
Red Cross Manager Tamara Lapsley says supplies are low. Now, the organization who helps those in need could use a lending hand.
“We have large families that need clothing so we’re looking to assist Salvation Army to getting some more clothes in for our families,” Lapsley.
The Red Cross partners with the Salvation Army and Helping Hands. Donations are accepted at both locations. In Columbus, LaMonica Peters, WCBI News.>
