COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -More than two dozen have applied to become Columbus’ next police chief. As of late this afternoon, city Human Resources Director Pat Mitchell says 25 people have turned in an application.
One person from inside the department has applied. Interim Chief Captain Fred Shelton has said that he would seek the job.
10 applicants are from Mississippi.
The position came open after former Police Chief Tony Carleton resigned last month following the shooting death of Ricky Ball.
A committee will review the applications before the city council votes to appoint a new chief.
