COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The proposed Columbus Bypass is one step closer to becoming a reality.
Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert was in Columbus speaking to the Lion’s Club on Friday and gave an update on the Columbus 45 Bypass project. He says they now have an environmental document and in federal construction, that’s a huge step towards building the bypass.
“That basically says that we know that the route is feasible. We know that that’s an environmentally sensitive area and we know that it is possible to build the Columbus Bypass. That’s a big step in the overall construction. Now we’ll look at route placement, design capability. We’ll look at the right-of-way needed. Those kinds of things are the next step in the process,” says Tagert.
If built, the new road will run west of the current Highway 45 from Highway 82 at Main Street to Highway 45 North, just south of the Columbus Air Force Base.
