VIDEO: College Basketball Recruiting & How the Game Has Changed

GOLDEN TRIANGLE, Miss. (WCBI)- The college basketball world is still reeling this week from the FBI sting accusing sales reps from apparel companies of bribing coaches and parents to steer kids to schools sporting their logos.

It comes down to this. Cash and Flash is what schools and apparel makers are buying.

Before the season or a game starts for a team, a fan is likely to see a uniform reveal on social media.

Flashy new designs were not something players and fans saw back when coach Glenn Schmidt played and coached the game of basketball.

With apparel companies striking deals with athletic departments across the nation.

While some could see this as a team selling themselves, others like Coach Sharon Fanning-Otis see the increase of revenue as a positive for universities.

Just like Schmidt, Coach Fanning-Otis reflects on her experience as a player and coach and how apparel deals has affected recruiting.

In the past, Schmidt says there was more of a focus on the actual game and not everything around it.

Both coaches don’t necessarily believe the apparel deals is a bad thing for universities.

They’ve come to terms that times are changing, and the age of uniform reveals and shoe deals are the future for college athletics.

The apparel reveals are also great tools for drawing social media followers, adding more appeal to a university’s athletic department.
