TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Some heavy hitters were in attendance Monday night to help raise money for the one of the organization’s devastated by the April 28th Tornado in Tupelo.
Supporters of American Legion Post 49 gathered at the Bancorp South Arena to hear speeches from various officials and political leaders about the importance of rebuilding the Post 49 headquarters building which was completely destroyed. The two U.S. Senate Candidates, Incumbent Thad Cochran and his challenger Travis Childers were both on hand to encourage those in attendance to donate.
“I’ve been a guest of the fine people out at Post 49, ” Childers noted. “And so we certainly understand the importance of rebuilding that. I saw the comradery, I saw the fellowship if you will of all of those members and I know what it means to this community to this town and this county to have it built back, the Democrat said.
“We need to support the initiative to raise money here and that’s one reason why I was invited to be here tonight,” Cochran said. “And I’m glad to join my friends here in the Tupelo in doing everything we can to be helpful,” the incumbent Republican pledged.
The cost to rebuild will be substantial. Post 49 needs to raise 400-thousand dollars above what is covered by insurance. Tonight’s event served as a kickoff of the campaign to get the money raised. Senator Roger Wicker of Tupelo was also one of the speakers.
