TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Heroes of the Civil Rights movement were celebrated in Tupelo. The regional meeting of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity recognized Mississippi’s important role in the Civil Rights movement. Ole Miss, Rust College, Mississippi Industrial College, the NAACP, Freedom Riders and the Mississippi National Guard were honored as well as Minister Robert Jamison of Tupelo and Ruby A. Harrison, one of the legendary Freedom Riders.
“Of course the turning point of the Civil Rights movement a lot of people believe was here in Mississippi and that’s why we’re honoring the institutions and the organizations that have been instrumental in providing help through that time,” says Mark McCloud of Kappa Alpha Psi.
On Saturday, Kappa Alpha Psi officers and other participants marched from Elizabeth Street to Tupelo City Hall in their honor.
