VIDEO: City OF Mantachie Still In Disbelief After A Bank Teller Was Shot And Killed A During Bank Robbery

MANTACHIE, Miss. (WCBI)-Two people are dead following a bank robbery at Farmers and Merchants in Mantachie.

A bank teller, Judy Guin, was shot and killed during the robbery. Not too long afterwards, The accused bank robber took her own life.

“It’s like, I’m just sick at my stomach,” said Mike Wilburn, who’s related to Guin through marriage. “I mean this is unreal. No money anywhere is worth this. ”

Frustration and grief spilled over into the parking lot of the bank as family members and friends tried to make sense of a senseless crime.

“The person walked into the bank, gun drawn, asked for, or demanded where’s the vault,” said Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson. “As the person went back to look at the vault, she turned and shot the teller.”

Ashlee Smith was the person who pulled the trigger.  Authorities said she intentionally shot Guin.

After shooting Guin, Dickson said Smith immediately fled from the scene.

Within ten minutes she was spotted in Saltillo driving a black Tahoe.  The chase came to an end when Smith shot and killed herself.

“I don’t know that any money was taken at this point,” said Sheriff  Dickinson.

“It’s crazy,” Wilburn expressed. “Why rob the bank. Why shoot her too. You knew the lady was trying to give her the money. Why kill somebody. It’s sensless.”

The small town of Mantachie is shaken after this tragedy.

“Why take a life over a dollar,” Wilburn asked.

“I’ve known that lady all my life and if I would have been standing there it wouldn’t have happened,” Sheriff Dickinson expressed. “I promise you. I have no words. I’m upset.”

Family members said Guin worked at the bank ever since it first opened.

They describe her as a Godly woman who loved her community.

They said she’s a wonderful person, a wonderful person who was taken away from them too soon.

“Anytime that you would go in the bank, Judy would want to know how you were doing, about the sick people of the community,” said Dr. John Adams, pastor of Mantachie First Baptist Church.

“You couldn’t have met a nice person,” Wilburn recalled. “She would give you the shirt off her back, she was just a great great person. I’m going to tell you, this lady was a great Christian. She loved Jesus and I know where she’s at.”

Another person was inside during the time of the robbery and shooting, however She did not receive any injuries.
