ACKERMAN, Miss. (WCBI) -Choctaw County’s coal mining plant wins a big legal round. A U. S. Supreme Court decision tells the EPA to rewrite the Clean Air Act, and this time include the costs for coal fired powered plants like Red Hills.
The costs of lowering mercury and other air toxins are estimated at more than 9 .6 billion dollars for lignite plants nationwide.
Utility companies in Mississippi, along with those in 23 other states, convinced the high court that’s too much to spend for a small reduction in pollution.
Area residents and employees feared that the EPA’s regulations would close the plant.
There are still obstacles ahead for Red Hills, including regulation of CO2 emissions. Those details are expected to be released by the EPA in August.
