A Choctaw County church is destroyed by an early morning fire. It happened on Crossroads Church Road just off Highway 15 where parishioners appear to be in a state of disbelief concerning the latest disaster.
People living near Crossroads Baptist Church could not help but hear the commotion around five o’clock Tuesday morning, the church built some time in the late 60’s went up in flames.
“Well I heard horns blowing and somebody had pulled in this guy out here’s driveway and told him the church was on fire. So they called 9-1-1,” said Mary Sue Kelly, Church Musician.
“We had two more Choctaw County Departments come. The church was 90% involved when we arrived,” said Shane Box, Mathiston Volunteer Fire Dept.
The 60-70 worshipers of Crossroads Baptist Church who are a light to that community, are totally in the dark as to what caused the fire.
“No, I have no idea at all. I know the heat is always turned off when we leave. We don’t leave anything on. We come on Sunday morning turn it back on. We really don’t have a clue what happened,” said Sheila Johnson, Church Member.
“This is just a sad sad thing that has happened. We just hate it so bad,” said Kelly.
The church is near the Oktibbeha and Webster County line, and people living there that attend the church, say they did have insurance and there is going to be a comeback.
“We got to get together and decide what to do, but we are going to re build. That would be my plan and my hope, that we will re build and come Sunday morning we are going to gather somewhere to worship,” said Johnson.
“We don’t know when, how long it will take or what, but we will,” said Kelly.
The state fire marshall is expected to investigate to determine the cause of that blaze.
