Video: Chickasaw Heritage on Display in Tupelo
TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) –Fourth graders from across the area had a hands on history lesson as part of a day long Chickasaw Celebration.
The destination for this unique field trip was Fairpark , in front of Tupelo City Hall. Students were able to see demonstrations such as cooking, stomp dancing, social stickball, basket making and other activities.
Organizers say it is important to teach young people about the rich history of the Chickasaws.
“Native American studies in our area schools has largely been generalized, we hope Chickasaw Nation’s history and culture, which was forged here in Tupelo and North Mississippi, that that is made available in a relevant way so their place of community here is more connected to them in terms of the Chickasaw people.”
Nearly 50 Chickasaw Nation citizens took part in the celebration. Prewitt says there will be similar events in the future.
