CHICKASAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – The Chicksaw County Sheriff’s Department is getting some much needed help from the community.
A local community group in Houston has offered to help check on the residents of Chickasaw County.
Welfare checks on the homebound and the elderly are a routine service offered by the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Department and now the Houston Plus Civitans have offered to assist them.
“The Civitan Club came to us with the idea of helping with the community and the Sheriff’s office in checking on the elderly or say people are going out of town on vacation or just going to be away from their house for a few days. They wanted to do something for community involvement to help the Sheriff’s office in checking on these people.,” says Deputy Jim Meyers.
The Sheriff’s Department says people should still call 9-1-1 if they need a welfare check. If an officer is available, the officer will handle the call. If an officer is unavailable, the responder may be a member of the Civitan club.
“Please call us. We want to be there to help them. We have a group now that really wants to help with the community. So we’re asking for community involvement,” says Meyers.
The dispatch unit will assign calls to Civitan volunteers as needed. Civitan members will report back to the Sheriff’s office if they don’t get an answer or suspect any trouble.
