MANTACHIE, Miss. (WCBI) – A Mantachie man is re-storing a relic from the past to keep tradition alive for the next generation.
Dan Walton was born and raised in Mantachie. He says one of his fondest childhood memories is about the house at the top of Mc Ferrin Hill.
“To get to the school at that time, you went down this street. All the kids and the buses still come up this hill. It’s called McFerrin Hill and it goes down to the high school. Thousands of young folks have passed this everyday going to school,” says Walton.
Walton bought the home a year ago. Historians believe the home was built before 1918. It’s taken six months to renovate and he plans to host an open house for the public by the end of spring.
“This home was the center of this community. It belonged to the McFerrin family who owned the general store when I was growing up. Everybody saw this house and I’ve always wanted an old home to fix up,” says Walton.
The newly refurbished home already has a name: the Statehouse Manor on McFerrin Hill. It sits on one acre of land, has two original bedrooms, a bedroom in the attic and a brand new kitchen. Walton says he’d like to rent the home out for local events and weddings in the near future.
Most of the renovations to the home are complete but Walton says he still plans to improve the landscaping.
