COLUMBUS AFB, Miss. (WCBI) -With 317 thousand men and women, the Air Force is still a pretty big organization. But the Commander at Columbus Air Force Base told the Base Community Council today that to be successful it can’t lose sight of the every day things that impact AIRMEN. That’s why after ranking next to last in some basic areas for airmen, the base pried extra dollars from the Pentagon to improve ITS fitness center, commissary and other facilities. The Columbus Club will be renovated from May through December, dorms will be upgraded and recreation areas will be worked on in the next five years. And it also means the community must be even more with the base in the future.
“Where is our key touch points with our largest number of people and where can we apply scarce resources to make sure we are taking care of the quality of life.
“We need to step up anjd continue to make improvements right along with them and make that commitment.”
Nichols also updated the group on the new mission the base has taken on to train 30 Afghan pilots and 90 mechanics. And the Air Force’s search for a new jet fighter training plane to replace the aging T-38 sometime in the next decade.
