VIDEO: Bukka White Fest 2017

ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI)- Aberdeen residents celebrated the life of one of it’s favorite sons this weekend.

As well as the towns love for Blues Music.

The historic Elkin Theater in downtown Aberdeen was closed. It’s billboard says Bukka White Blues Festival no movie.

That’s because the 10th annual event drew residents and visitors to the banks of the Tenn Tom waterway to hear some top musical acts perform.

If you’re downtown you can’t miss the mural and commemorative marker honoring White and two other blues legends Albert King and Howlin Wolf.

Fisher, who was born and raised in Aberdeen says there is an interesting story about White’s first name.
“His actual name was Booker T Washington White B-o-o-k-e-r but I think a DJ mispronounced it and misspelled it and the name Bukka kind of stuck,” says Fisher.

After resurrecting his career White performed well into the 1970’s before passing away in 1977. And Fisher says White should be remembered for something else.

Robbins says Aberdeen is proud that White is one of its favorite sons.

Aberdeen is thankful to the Army Corps of Engineers for maintaining the Tenn-Tom Waterway so they could have such a good venue for the festival.
