Video: Budget and Cheerleaders top the Agenda at Special School Board Meeting
STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) –The new school year starts in less than a month, and the Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District is crunching the numbers for next year’s budget.
Thursday night board members held a special called meeting to discuss the teacher salary scale, state funding, library books, and supplies funding.
They plan to finalize the budget July 21st.
Another item on Thursday’s agenda also drew some attention.
There were some tense moments as the meeting moved on to the subject of cheerleading.
Discussion included the size of the squad, the lack of African-American cheerleaders, and the number of games the girls in which the girls are required to participate.
One concerned mom says these issues have grown out of proportion, and should’ve been addressed sooner.
“They’re attempting… I like what I heard athletic director talking about. There are several that seem like they don’t want to move at all and I don’t understand how this is this hard of an issue and how it’s gotten to this point. It just shouldn’t have gotten to this point so far it’s just… it can be fixed simply.”
The board decided to give the coaches of the current squad a chance to discuss the issues.
School leaders will address it at the board’s next regular meeting.
