TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) –At this annual “Champion for Youth” breakfast, a true champion for healthy living was honored and remembered through healthy food choices, and even a short exercise routine.
“This year we have chosen to honor the work of the late Hank Boerner and everything he did for wellness for our kids here at the Boys and Girls Club,” said Evie Boyd, of the Boys and Girls Club.
The enthusiastic and energetic Boerner was director of NMMC’s Wellness Center, and co chair of the Mayor’s Healthy Task Force.
So, to honor Hank’s memory and passion for fitness, supporters of the Boys and Girls Clubs pitched in and bought these balls, hula hoops, jump ropes and other equipment so youngsters can have fun staying active.
Hank’s family says it’s what he would have wanted for the youngsters.
““If you’ve got hula hoops and you’ve got soccer balls, basket balls and beach balls and it’s fun to you you’re probably going to enjoy it and if you enjoy it and it’s fun it’s something you will continue , so I think Hank really wanted people to know exercise can be fun and if it is fun , it will be part of your lifestyle,” said Helen Boerner.
Boys and Girls Club members say they are learning the value of physical fitness.
Are you excited about trying out this new equipment? “Yes sir” What do you think you will like best about it? “ The basketballs,” said 10 year old Kage Heberling.
Hank Boerner knew it was vital to encourage kids to adopt healthy lifestyles. With this latest gift, boys and girls club members and the community will continue to benefit from his passion and drive for years to come.
