TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – A frosty attraction is set to open for area residents and visitors.
The finishing touches are being put on the ice rink at Tupelo’s Bancorpsouth Arena. For the past week, crews have been painting and mixing the substance that becomes the ice for hockey games, Disney on Ice and public skating.
It has taken more than 5,000 gallons of water to make the ice rink ready. It is a long process.
“The concrete is bare and then underneath, two inches underneath the concrete are three quarter inch pipes that run, ten miles of pipe underneath the slab.It freezes the slab, to thirteen degrees then we lay layers of ice on top of that, until we get to an inch and a half,” said Craig Russell,Director of Operations for the Bancorpsouth Arena.
The first event on the ice is a hockey game between Ole Miss and Georgia Tech Friday night. Then on Saturday, the rink is open for public skating. For a complete listing of events at the ice rink, go to www.bcsarena.com
