KOSCIUSKO, MS (WCBI) – Attala County supervisors will have to start over in the effort to build a new jail for the county. Supervisors gathered this afternoon to open bids on the new jail, but wound up rejecting all of the bids, because they were too high. The low bid right now is eight million 450 thousand dollars to build the 76 inmate facility. The current jail which houses 24 inmates was built in the 1960’s. It has a variety of problems which has led to a federal mandate to build a new jail. Since taxpayers will be footing the entire cost of the project, supervisors wanted to make certain the bids meet the county’s needs before awarding the construction contract.
Supervisors are hoping to keep the project cost around the six million mark. The board hopes to rebid the project in the next sixty days.
