Video: Area Law Officer Gets Top Award From Peers

ABERDEEN, MISS. (WCBI) – For Brandon Davis, this workday began like any other.

But the chief investigator for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department has a new title, “Deputy of the Year.”

“I was kind of just, humbled by it,” Davis said.

Davis received the honor at the recent conference of the Mississippi Sheriff’s Association. Sheriffs in each of the 82 counties nominated one deputy, and Investigator Davis came out on top.

“It’s just a rewarding thing to have a good deputy like him and a good man to go along with it to receive this award, not only for himself, but for our county, I think it says something for our county also,” said Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell.

Both the sheriff and investigator Davis say a key to being named the top deputy of the year is a passion for the job, persistence and attention to detail.

“It’s always better to have too much information than not enough information. So one thing I do, I don’t ever stop on an investigation, even if someone confesses, I always try to give more information on the case than what the suspect has already given us,” Davis said.

Investigator Davis says he is blessed to be able to make a difference, everyday.

“Being able to help someone and make a change in either their life, or somebody’s life they’re kin to. Somebody’s life they are attached to, I’ve learned, I didn’t at first, but I’ve learned over time that not everybody is supposed to go to jail, not everybody is supposed to get a ticket. You can just sit there and help someone and kind of lead them in the right direction,” he said.

Davis has worked with Monroe County for four years. He has also served as a police officer and a game warden.
