Video: Area Job Fair Opens To Public For The First Time, More than Sixty Employers Attend

BOONEVILLE, MISS. (WCBI) – Akasha Bell is about to graduate at Northeast Mississippi Community College, so she came to the school’s annual job fair, with plenty of resumes, eager to make vital contacts.

“I do feel pretty good about it, I talked to APMM and they’re really excited to have a female in the industrial maintenance career,” Bell said.

On the other side of the gym, students were learning how they can earn money while receiving career skills through the Army National Guard.

NEMCC’s Spring Job Fair is an opportunity for students, and this year the public, to get in front of potential employers.

“We try to prepare our students early on, this semester and even as early as the fall semester, we start talking with them about preparing a resume, making sure it’s updated, it’s creative. We want them to be dressed appropriately, to approach people and show that they are interested in a job,” said Carrie Cobb, NEMCC’s Career and Technical Counselor.

This is the largest job fair Northeast has held, some employers have been here numerous times, for others it’s their first time but they’re all looking for something specific.

“This is a great opportunity to meet young people who want to get into construction, we’re looking for young people who want to get out in the construction industry and build something with their hands, make something,” said Aaron Gregory, owner of Columbus based Gregory Construction.

“Kids in the college life, we are here to try and help them pay for college , and look for future soldiers for the Guard, looking for that education side, future leaders,” said Tom Jones, a recruiter with the Mississippi National Guard.

“I’m looking for partners, I’m not concerned about agents, I’m looking for partners, someone who can come in , help grow Mississippi,” said Lenell Black, of Lincoln Heritage.

Mississippi’s economy may be on the upswing, but for those needing a job or wanting to change their career path, this job fair provides many possibilities.

This is the first time the NEMCC Job Fair has been opened to the general public.
