TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -It was a chance for local Democrats to support their party’s candidates, less than one month before November’s election. A “get out the vote” rally for the Lee County Democratic Party attracted hundreds to the BancorpSouth Arena.
The event featured Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood,Northern Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley, Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton, Lee County Supervisor Tommie Lee Ivy and others.
Travis Childers, who is challenging Republican incumbent Thad Cochran for the Senate seat says the fundraiser is a great way to energize voters as the election nears.
“This is what they call an off year election, in other words the presidential election is not on the ballot, many local races, we do have judge races and in some counties special election races. But this is an important election. The person we elect to the United States Senate will serve for the next six years, and we need to think about that.”
A recurring theme from all speakers centered on healthcare, education and jobs.
