AMORY, MS (WCBI) – Amory’s mayor wants to set the record straight about a petition circulating around town. Mayor Blalock gave an informative statement before the Board of Aldermen meeting Tuesday night. An organization called Citizens for Economic Development of Amory is seeking signatures for a referendum, so voters can decide whether or not to legalize alcohol sales in Amory.
” I think a lot of people think that they are currently voting pro or against alcohol right now and actually what that petition is asking them to do is to make the determination whether or not they want to actually vote or not. I want to calm everybody’s nerves and say we haven’t even made it to the point where it can be put to a vote at this point and time.”
According to the state statute, a petition must present 20-percent of registered voters for it be put to a vote.
