AMORY, MISS. (WCBI) — A historic building is getting a new lease on life in Amory. As WCBI’s Allie Martin reports, the old Armory had become an eyesore, but thanks to a generous gift, it is now restored and ready to host a variety of events.
Volunteers are busy, decorating the old Armory , getting it ready for a big show this weekend, with a 50s theme.
“This is going to be a great night, fun for the family , bring your family, dress up if you want to,” said Devy Ferguson, a volunteer who has helped redecorate the old Armory.
It’s the first major event at this building since it was renovated last year. The building, once used by the National Guard, sat unused and neglected for more than 20 years. But a gift from a local family has brought new life into the historic facility.
“All the floors, wiring and duct work, redone all windows replaced, the doors are original,” Ferguson said.
The stage is also original, and historic, because it’s the same stage where Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins played in 1955 and 1956.
In fact, Geneva Kimble was there in ’56 and remembers the evening vividly.
“We sat up to the left of the stage here and when Elvis went on break, we went on the stage and got to comb his hair, he had a few little pimples, but we were just thrilled,” Kimble said.
And Kimble plans on being back Saturday evening for the sock hop.
“I love to bop,” she said.
Kimble and many others will be able to make new memories, at the old Armory.
Stan Perkins, the son of Carl Perkins will be at the show Saturday evening. For information on the event go to http://www.cityofamoryms.com/amory-proud/old-armory/
