BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Alabama’s Voter I.D. Law faces a new legal challenge.
The NAACP and Greater Birmingham Ministries are suing the State in Federal Court.
The lawsuit claims that the law requiring citizens to present identification to vote will keep thousands from casting ballots.
The complaint cites state estimates of over 200 thousand residents that could be disenfranchised by the law.
The groups claim that most of those affected would be African American and Hispanic.
Alabama’s Voter I.D. Law went into effect last year. It requires voters to present one of several forms of photo I.D. At the polls.
The State does make voter identification cards available to citizens free of charge.
