CALEDONIA, Miss. (WCBI) – It was supposed to be a day of fun in the sun for in Caledonia for one Alabama family. Now a father and son are hospitalized in Columbus, after a tragic accident at Lawrence Bridge.
“I heard everybody screaming, ‘They’re drowning, they’re drowning’,” says Sabrina Bedford, a bystander who tried to help.
Lowndes County deputies say a 26-year old man got caught in the current, near the ramp at Lawrence Bridge. His 50-year old father jumped in to try and save him. That’s when they both went under. Eventually, both men were brought to shore and more bystanders stepped up to help.
“I took off from down here and ran down there. I started CPR on one of them and he coughed up his water and he came back to. I went to the next one but he didn’t have a pulse whenever I started,” says Bedford.
Bedford says she grew up swimming at Lawrence Bridge and believes the area is safe. Now, she’s glad she was there to help.
“I’m certified CPR. I’ve been to school and first aide and all that. This is the first time I’ve ever had to use it. I thank God that I know that now,” says Bedford.
Both father and son were taken to Baptist Memorial Golden Triangle. The conditions of the two men are still unknown.
