ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – The Aberdeen community came together this afternoon for its 3rd Annual Aberdeen Angels gift give-away.
Christmas is just a few days away and Santa Claus has already arrived for some lucky children in Aberdeen.
“It shows that the community can come together to provide for others who are less fortunate. So it’s a great thing for Aberdeen and for the workers at City Hall who are trying to play Santa Claus today,” says Aberdeen Mayor Cecil Bell.
Sixty-four children were chosen from the Aberdeen School District to receive gifts donated by the community.
“I’m a member of New Hebron Missionary Baptist Church and I’m the choir president. We decided that we would adopt an angel. That’s what we did last year and it went so beautifully last year, we decided we’d do it again today,” says Myrtice Tumblin.
City officials say this year has been the best year yet for donations. They received more gifts than ever, including 12 bikes.
Cecile Fields’ daughter was chosen to receive a gift this year.
“This is a great program that they have going on in Aberdeen. I am very grateful right now. I have my 6 year old and this means the world to us,” says Fields.
The Mayor says he doesn’t know who started the program but he’s happy that the City can help serve the community during the most wonderful time of the year.
This was the first time that the Angel Tree event was hosted at Aberdeen City Hall.
