LOUISVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- An empty chair sits in the middle of Ms. Shaw’s 2nd grade classroom. A grim reminder that 8 year old Tyler Tucker is no longer with us. But surrounding his desk, are handwritten notes and drawings of love.
“We just want the focus to be on Tyler and his bright, shining face and the positive things he had going on. His classmates have had the opportunity to write stories and tape them to his desk and that has went over really well,” said Fair Elementary Principal, Leigh Ann Hailey.
Teachers and staff at Fair Elementary described Tyler as a bright student who was always a gentleman.
“Ms. Shaw has had so many positive things to say, opening the doors for teachers. She has a story about him getting her fork every day at lunch. Just a wonderful, wonderful child,” said Hailey
Educators are reflecting on the last assignment Tyler completed. Acting as a news anchor, he submitted a detailed report about a tornado heading into Louisville. He also offered safety tips. Seven days later, Tyler’s imaginary tale became a devastating reality. Now, counselors are on hand, helping students cope.
“Just in general a lot of why questions. And I think as adults we want to provide those answers and we can’t do that. But just allowing them to open up and express themselves and talk about it. That’s so important,” said Hailey.
Nearly 100 students and 16 staff members lost their homes last week. Right now, they are hosting a donation drive at the school, allowing students to take home clothes and other items.
