VERNON, Ala. (WCBI) – On Tuesday, voters in Vernon, Alabama chose Glenn Crawford to be their mayor for the next four years. Crawford says he will focus on making some much needed improvements.
“We’re looking to, in the next four years, to be able to increase our revenue stream by getting a shop-at-home program going where we use our local businesses. We are looking to produce about 50-75 new jobs, which I think is a good goal for our small community. Then we’re looking at improving the city services. We’ll work on getting better streets here. We’re going to work on improving our city park and other items such as that,” says Crawford.
Vernon’s run-off election had one of the largest voter turnouts in years. Mayor-elect Glenn Crawford says it indicates that the citizens of Vernon are ready for a change.
“We have been on a backslide for the past several years and I think the excitement of a new administration and some new ideals has sparked an interest and I think the voters responded to it,” says Crawford.
Vernon business owner, Katherine Collins of the Stella and Dee bakery, wants the mayor to make the city more attractive for business.
“I would love to see growth. I would love to see more development, more revenue and certainly a beautification act. We’re working on that right now. With the mayor, I just want more jobs for the city and also hopes for a better park and better recreation services for our children here,” says Collins.
Crawford says he ran for mayor because he wanted to help Vernon become a success.
Robert Covington of Council Place #2 and Cathy Wharton of Council Place #5 were also elected in the run-off.
