AMORY, Miss. (WCBI)-Deer season is an excellent time for hunters as they partner with Mississippi food pantries this holiday season.
Volunteers at the Amory Food Pantry have been busy filling walk-in freezers with meat this holiday season, and Monroe County deer hunters are doing their part in helping to feed the less fortunate among us. As hunters are thinning out the herds, the harvest is deer to the needy.
“We are fortunate enough in Amory to have a family that is willing to pay for all the processing. We are truly blessed,” said Linda Holden, Pantry Volunteer.
“Our kids get the help. They bring the deer with us to the processors and they get to know that it comes up here. And they’re serving and helping people so its helped all the way around. Its helped the herd and its helping the people in the community,” said Malcolm Glenn, Deer Hunter.
“Protein is expensive, meat is hard to come by at a food bank. We have already fed over 16 thousand people thus far this year,” said Holden.
And deer hunting season is not over yet. That means more meat for the shelves of the pantry, and teenagers from nearby Amory Career Technology Center are lending a helping hand as well.
“This is my first year and we come and help them load and unload food and stack it and get it all in order,” said Austin Grubbs, Teenage Volunteer.
“For me that, I’ve always worked with my family, but this actually give more back to the community,” said Yen Nguyen, Teenage Volunteer.
According to USDA statistics, one out of every five children in our country go hungry each day without having supper.
“Any deer hunter can help that statistic in Monroe County go away,” said Holden.
“The Hunt Club I’m in has done over 70,” said Glenn.
About 8 of the deer providing meat to the pantry was because of Glenn’s donation.
Donors have been hunting for hunger for nine years now. So far this season deer hunters have provided two tons of processed meat for the Amory Food Pantry.
