JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The chancellor at the University of Mississippi has refused an offer to extend his contract as the school’s leader after two weeks of heated protests on campus supporting him.
The decision regarding Chancellor Dan Jones was announced Thursday in a news release from Jim Borsig, the state’s commissioner of higher education.
College Board trustees told Jones March 20 that they would not keep him on past Sept. 14, when his contract runs out. They say Jones hasn’t done enough to improve financial and contracting management at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
The decision provoked widespread protests by many alumni, students, faculty and donors, asking the 12-member College Board to reconsider.
