Update – Fire Crews Readying To Enter Biofuels Plant

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Authorities say a fire at a north Mississippi biofuels plant has died down enough for a crew to get close and try to extinguish the remaining flames.

The fire has been burning since early Wednesday at the plant near New Albany, but no injuries were reported. There were also at least three explosions at JNS Biofuels, formerly North Mississippi Biodiesel.

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Brett Carr said Thursday afternoon that firefighters hoped to extinguish the fire with foam.

But, Carr cautioned, firefighters could be pushed back if the flames strengthen. He says it’s not clear how long it will take to put the fire out.

Carl Harlin, the plant manager, said the fire is now limited to one site. He estimates the damage will be in the millions.
