Update: Columbus Approves Chico Potts As Boys Basketball Coach
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – Columbus has decided not to reinstate Luther Riley and has approved Alfrico “Chico” Potts to be the Falcons’ head high school boys basketball coach. The moves came Friday during a Columbus School Board meeting, though Potts has not accepted the job.
He told CBS affiliate WXVT in Greenville that he has not signed a contract and will weigh his options this weekend. He said he may return to coach at Gentry High School.
Potts has coached at Gentry, a 4A school in Indianola, for the past two seasons. He reached at least the state quarterfinals both years, compiling a record of 53-13.
He was the head coach at Mississippi Valley State for two seasons, going 14-46 during that time. Potts was an assistant at MVSU for four years and also spent three years as an assistant at Tupelo High School where he was the head coach of the junior varsity team.
Riley failed to submit his contract by the deadline after leading the Falcons to a 6A state championship in 2016, his first season. The Columbus School Board elected not to reinstate Riley in two separate meetings, the second of which was Friday.
