INGOMAR, Miss. (WCBI) — A student in our area wins big in a contest that encourages youngsters to pursue the adventure of reading.
The winner is a star student, who will get to take two lucky guests to a popular college football game Thanksgiving weekend.
The lunchtime pep rally was a chance for students at Igomar Attendance Center to cheer for the basketball team.
And it was also a time to recognize nearly 100 students who took on a reading challenge.
“It’s ‘Read Your Way to The Egg Bowl” they’re encouraged to read six plus books,” said Joyce Helmick, President of the Mississippi Association of Educators.
Twelve thousand students statewide took part in the contest and two grand prize winners get three tickets to the Egg Bowl. Contestants were asked to pick their favorite team, MSU, or Ole miss.
One of the big winners is a fifth grader at the Attendance Center.
Madison is a straight A student and says her family was discussing the upcoming game around the breakfast table.
“We were talking about Ole Miss going to beat Mississippi State,”Madison said.
Madison’s mother is going to the Egg Bowl, and believes her daughter will enjoy her first college football game experience.
“I’m super excited for her, I was in the car wash, going through the car wash and I was about in tears,” said Amber McCurdy.
Madison’s teacher is encouraging Madison and other contestants to continue with the reading adventure.
“I hope they become lifelong readers and they love to read and take it with them throughout their lifetime, and they might win tickets to the Egg Bowl,” said Tina Taylor, a reading teacher at Ingomar Attendance Center.
Madison, and a winner from Meridian, will be recognized on the field, during a time out at the Egg Bowl.
