Twin state tornado summary for 2019
The year 2019 will go down in the record books as an extremely active one for tornadoes across the Twin States.
Preliminary data show that over 100 twisters occurred in Mississippi. This is well above the yearly average of 30 going back to 1950. Once the finally tally is in 2019 may break the all-time yearly record of 109 tornadoes set in 2008. Two fatalities occurred, the first during the EF-3 Columbus tornado on February 23rd and the second on April 13th when an EF-2 struck Monroe County.
Alabama had at least 81 tornadoes during 2019, almost twice the 30 year average of 46. This includes the violent EF-4 tornado that killed 23 people on March 3rd in Lee County and the strong EF-2 tornado that killed 2 in Lawrence County on December 16th.
