Tupelo’s West Main bridge replacement: Estimated finish by Nov. 2024
TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The city of Tupelo now has a timeline for replacing a bridge on West Main that is a major route for motorists.
The city will advertise for bids on November 14 and November 21 to replace the West Main Bridge near Steele’s Dive. That bridge was deemed unsafe after an inspection this past August.
Engineers found corrosion on many of the bridge’s pilings.
City Engineer Dennis Bonds said once a bid was accepted, it would be presented to the City Council to approve the contract. Bonds said construction could start in February on the $2 million project.
“We have to go in and demolish the existing bridge and then begin from the ground up, drilling the piers, into that chalk-type foundation. And build that all the way up from the ground, in a speedy and safe manner. All those things take time, it’s a complicated process to build the bridge back out,” said Bonds.
It was estimated construction would be finished by November 2024.
